The sun halo Have you seen a bright halo around the sun? recently in Trier, Germany, unusual arches and the halo was so bright that even common passer-byes noticed them. In this photo you can see a fantastic sky show. It depicts a 22-degree halo, a full parhelic circle 9a circle of false suns), an arch around the horizon and even a lower side sensible (tangent) arch. A model was calculated with a computer describing this phenomenon rather well. Usually much stronger direct sunlight is covered by a cloud. Such phenomena arise, when sunlight is refracted by falling and vacillating ice crystals. The same crystals cause the appearance of false suns and moon halos. [based on materials from Astronet. Ru]
